Passive House

PASSIVE HOUSE is a rigorous building standard focused on creating incredibly energy-efficient homes.

It is based on five main principles:

  1. Extreme Insulation: Imagine wrapping your house in a super-insulated blanket. This minimizes heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer.

  2. Airtightness: Think of your home as an airtight container. This prevents drafts and uncontrolled air leakage, which significantly reduces energy waste.

  3. High-Performance Windows: Triple-paned windows with special coatings to maximize sunlight in winter and minimize heat gain in summer.

  4. Efficient Ventilation: A sophisticated system brings in fresh air while recovering heat from outgoing air, ensuring healthy indoor air quality without energy loss.

  5. Thermal Bridge-Free Construction: Careful attention is paid to eliminate "thermal bridges" – areas where heat can easily escape, like around windows and doors.

Benefits for Homeowners:

  • Increased Resilience From Wildfire: The strategies that have been used to improve energy use performance have also proven to be effective in protecting a house in a wildfire event. An airtight house will not let embers in, preventing fire that threatens the structure.

  • Lower Energy Bills: Significantly reduced heating and cooling costs.

  • Increased Comfort: Consistent, even temperatures year-round with minimal drafts.

  • Improved Indoor Air Quality: Fresh, filtered air for a healthier home environment.

  • Reduced Environmental Impact: Minimizes your carbon footprint.

  • Increased Home Value: Passive House homes often command a premium on the market.
